Molting and singing

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Molting and singing

Post by Will » Mon Aug 19, 2013 6:15 pm

I have always like canarys and their songs and this year for valentines day my beloved bought me one. I have truly enjoyed him and his song and he sang everyday nearly all day up until about mid June and that's when he stopped. I figured he was fixing to start his molt (due to all the feathers that started showing up everywhere) and did my research and have feed him accordingly. He never seemed depressed or stressed and now it's late August and all his feathers have come back in and he looks great as well as acts happy. My question is will he start singing again ,because he hasn't, and I so miss his song. Do canarys only sing at the start of breeding season of each year. I researched and can't find anything on it.

I have tried to figure out how to resize my photos so that I could post them and this iPad doesn't give an option of resizing or saving it on a smaller scale (or I'm to dumb to figure it out), then it hit me my bf has a iPhone so I borrowed it and emailed them to myself selecting medium instead of large. Hope it works :).

This is my canary, Valentine. I dunno what kind he is or what color you would call him. When he sings his song is loud and can be pretty long, but I love it.

I have a few canaries for the pure joy of their song at sunrise in February. It is a real mood elevator in a Wisconsin winter. Mine are doing the same thing as yours, one has just started to tune up again now.

Most canaries DON'T sing during and for several weeks after the moult. The song should gradually come back within the next few weeks. It's almost like they have to learn how to sing all over again - it comes back a little bit at a time.
It also depends on the birds health and the type of canary that you have. Song bred canaries will sing more frequently and the duration of the "mute phase" will be shorter. I've had spanish timbrados that sang right through the moult as long as they weren't paired with a female. Good luck and keep us posted. Bob

P.S. Just a guess, but your's looks like possibly an American Singer. No way to tell for sure with so many mixed canaries these days. Also, you may want to play him some youtube clips of other canaries singing to help encourage him to sing again. Bob

Canaries have truly beautiful songs!. My 12 year old, Kevin, still sings lustily every year. As he's got on with age, its been harder for him each year (to moult) and he's taken a little longer, but he always starts singing again (he's at the stage where we have to close the door sometimes, he's THAT loud!). I supply plently of greens, singer food, and exercise (he flies around the room several times a day). Good luck with your canary :)

30 seconds to Bob is a great source of advice on canaries! I ordered a Canary singer CD ages from Amazon, and use it every year to help get Kevin back into action. When he first starts trying to sing, he sounds like a teenage boy! ie high and squeaky!

Your canary is gorgeous. I love his color and markings.
My guess was also American singer but as Bob pointed out, hard to tell these days.
I hope you begin hearing song again soon. :D
