I've been lurking these boards for a while now and finally decided it's about time to say hi and thanks for the wealth of knowledge you've all provided for me to explore.
I am 24 years of age and happily married, though due to work obligations I only get to see my partner on weekends.
My companions throughout the week are a young pair of gloster-ish siblings named Hansel and Gretel. Caring for them brings me such an immense joy and lifts my spirits, instilling in me a sense of purpose in addition to a greater appreciation for all of life's blessings.
My feathered friends are just 6 months old and were given to me by an elderly woman who pampered them terribly but found herself unable to further care for them due to her own declining health.

Hello and welcome to the forum! Young canaries are extremely difficult to sex. Be sure thet they are indeed Hansel and Gretel and not Hansel and Hans - or you may experience fighting when they reach sexual maturity at 10 mos. to a year of age. Good luck and keep us posted. Bob

Hans and Hansel... LOL!
I'll admit I have only a hunch as to their genders based off what their bottoms look like right now but am aware that even the most experienced breeders can be fooled and I likely won't be certain until they either start singing or building nests, laying eggs, etc.
I am actually hoping they both turn out to be hens since right now they are the best of friends; it would be nice if things could remain as they are, but I will be happy regardless of gender outcomes so long as they both mature into healthy birds.
Should they turn out to be M/F or M/M though I am prepared to separate them so as to prevent inbreeding, genetic deformities, or fighting.

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like you have gotten hooked by these little beauties. Birds can be such company, even when they aren't the so-called companion birds like parrots.

I had no idea two hens might get territorial until just now. My bestie's grandma breeds canaries and she keeps several hens in a flight cage just about twice the size of mine. Hmph... I have at least three months to get this sorted out. Thanks for the heads up!
