Mom won't feed babies help please

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Mom won't feed babies help please

Post by Snow finch » Sat Jan 04, 2014 2:16 am

I just had my second clutch of canaries die this time it was only one chick. Last clutch it was two chicks. The mother sits on the eggs just fine they hatch and usually only survive for about three to four days then they die with empty crops. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I give them egg food every day and veggies plus their seed. I usually don't put a male with a female until I see her trying to build a nest I have tried leaving the male in and also pulling him out what ever I try doesn't seem to work any tips or pointers would be greatly appreciated. I have them in the same room as my finches the light timers are set for 15 hours and it's usually around 70 degrees plus or minus five. I have two males and three females all in different cages not sure what to do?

How old are these birds? Are they first time parents? I always waited until my canaries were two before breeding them. They seem to "figure things out" better then. Also, I find with canaries, the males do most of the feeding. He feeds the hen on the nest, and the hen feeds the chicks. Some birds just don't make good parents, but it's very unusual with canaries, especially if they have been conditioned well and it is truly breeding season. It always helps to have an older hen or two around to act as an emergency foster. Bob

maybe you are right maybe they are not good parents. the male is new and i dont really know his age the female is around 2 years, atleast that is what i was told. i have never used a foster mom before. could i just put a baby in a nest and her instict will take over does she need to be in breeding mode herself too? or is it like my societies i have to get them warmed up with some dummie eggs. thanks for the info we will keep trying
