Hey there,
Beaker just finished his off-season molt, and I decided to trim his freakishly long nails. Unfortunately, I trimmed one of his back nails a little too short it seems. There wasn't a lot of blood…just a little dot, but I think it might be sore and he's holding his foot tucked up. He is still singing. I feel terrible. Is there anything I can do right now, or just wait until it heals? Thanks for all the wonderful advice and helping me avoid killing my bird.

Just wait until it heals. Nails grow (and heal) quickly. Bob

If it happens again you can press the nail into a bar of soap or press some cornstarch onto the nail to clot the blood.

Thank you for the good advice. He was doing better by the time I covered him for the night (wasn't holding it up anymore). I cut his nails REALLY short…just above the quick on all of them…poor guy. Hopefully it will be a while before I need to worry about them again.

Hi there. Years ago, they used to have this yellow antiseptic powder (cant recall the name) that you could dip bleeding nails (birds, cats, dogs, what have you)into. It would stop the bleeding and also stop the possibility of infection. Does anybody else remember this, and is it still available? Handy stuff to have around, especially if one has hookbills.
