I was hoping someone could help with what expected offspring would be from pairing a yellow mosaic satinette cock with a yellow mosaic hen ?


I've tried searching online but can't find any info on above pairing.


Will i get any satinette offspring ?

My novice understanding is you will get the following:

MALES: yellow mosaic agates or isabels (satinette-carriers) in varying melanin patterns ranging from medium variegated to self but likely not clears [unless the father is split for the mutant clear gene]*

FEMALES: yellow mosaic satinettes in varying melanin patterns ranging from medium variegated to self but likely not clears [unless the father is split for the mutant clear gene]

* Agates or isabels because you didn't specify of which mutation your bird's satinette is a dilution of.

The rules I used to deduce the above are the following:

1. Mosaic x Mosaic = 100% Mosaic
2. Self (purebred) x Clear = Selfs (carrying clear) and Variegateds*
3. Self (carrying clear) x Clear = Selfs (carrying clear), Variegateds, Clears*
4. Agate, Isabel > Satinette**
5. Satinette Male x Normal Female = Normal Males (carrying satinette) and Satinette Females***

* Very likely that your agate male is "self+self" if he is purebred agate.
** ">" = "dominant over"
*** Gene for satinette is sex-linked.

Hope that all makes sense.

One last note:

I personally know a breeder who recently crossed a [clear] yellow mosaic with a [self] agate yellow mosaic. That pairing resulted in one medium-variegated yellow mosaic chick and two [self] agate yellow mosaic chicks.

Green Chopper , many thanks for your reply, initially the satinette hen wasn't showing any interest in breeding but has since bred with 2 weaned cock chicks and more in nest, i'm not sure if i'll be able to get any more unrelated satinettes to make up more pairs for next year. So i was thinking about breeding the satinette cock with mosaic hens to give me half brothers/sisters to pair up next year, this is the cock

There's no variegation on any of the mosaics, going by what you say about the satinette being sex-linked then will all hens the cock fathers be variegated satinette hens ? and cocks would be variegated mosaics split to satinette ? and in order to get young like origionals i'd need to breed the variegation out of them until i had selfs again which could take a few generations to be sure.

My apologies. I thought you were initially breeding a satinette mosaic male with a [clear] normal mosaic female.

That hen in the picture looks to be self. If bred to the self male in the picture there's no reason why you should get anything other than self chicks.

If the male is satinette, crossing him with a normal hen will give you satinette hens and normal-looking carrier-males. Hens cannot ever be normal-looking carriers. Breeding a normal male to a satinette hen will give you normal-looking carrier-males and normal hens.
