canary beak over grown!
I have a canary and i just noticed its top beak is growing long! She/he has a cuttle bone but doesnt use it. The other canary is doing well. It looks a little "drowsy" at times when i check on it. Its not able to eat as much as it needs to because of this. Please if anyone has info on what i should do?

Justin, I don't know much about this subject but will attach some links that may help you. There are health issues that could possibly cause this, but it may not be the cause at all. If the link about trimming doesn't help, I'm sure You Tubes are available to help with this. lovezebs is good also with canary issues.

Re: canary beak over grown!
Beak over growth is most likely related to there not being enough things to rub their beaks on that will wear down the tips. I put pedi perches and natural perches as well as disinfected stones from outside. They love to sit on the stones to eat and wipe their beak after, which helps keep them trim.
If a finch has an overgrowth, I take nail trimmers and hold the finch in one hand with the head between my index and middle fingers. I hold the head steady and trim a very tiny bit until the beak is even. It's scary to do the first time, so be steady and careful.

What finchmix22 is perfect advice...about the pedi perch, etc. And also the trimming. I attached a link about that. It's just like fingernails. They don't feel it.

Re: canary beak over grown!
Soooooo i have another problem with my canary which im guessing is a she. She is always sitting in her food dish and fluffed up as if she is sitting on an egg (im thinking shes starting to nest since the male has started to sing non stop during the day.) ive had to pick several pieces of "poo" from her back feathers and now her vent is distended and shes trying to poop but its not comin out all the way… it looks kind of big for her Size. What can i do?? Poor thing

Re: canary beak over grown!
Justin, that doesn't sound good. I'm not an expert with canaries. Could she be egg bound. Is she getting enough calcium in case? Did you supply a heat lamp, moisture in the air? The only thing I can do is look for links that might help. I'm not sure if lovezebs is available right now. She's hasn't been around lately, but I tagged her in case she can help. http://beautyofbirds.com/sickbirdsymptoms.html This page that I just attached has "swollen vent" but you can go back a page for more info and there is a lot of other info it offers. I'm not sure if this link will help you. All that I've read is either saying what is in the link I've already posted...egg binding, a cloaca prolapse...or working towards one. This link shows pictures, though it's a finch, it happens in all species of birds. It might have other helpful info. I didn't read it all. Hope you find something useful. http://www.finchforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=27166

Re: canary beak over grown!
Thanks Corkysgirl ! I reallyyy appreciate it. The poop is still there like she cant push it out. Shes acting as if shes nesting. I think she may be trying to lay an egg since the male has stimulated her with his song. I reallyyyyy hope she isnt egg bound but how shal i know? The link youve posted and the other thread gave good info but i dont feel her symptoms match those. Although it is greatlyyy appreciated. Ugh, i hope shes ok
I have a vitamin supplement i place in their water everyday as well as cuttle bone. If shes not better by tomorrow i will set up a hospital cage i suppose, unless someone has another idea lol. Ive tryed wetting a Q-tip with warm water and rubbing it onto her vent.

Re: canary beak over grown!
Justin, She may be young, not have a large enough opening to pass an egg. Hopefully that's not the case. Here is a link with some info. She should be in a sick cage as soon as possible. Extra calcium. Shave off extra cuttle bone if you don't have liquid calcium to give her. Moist heat, either from a pot of water in the room or near the shower but don't let her get chilled. She needs to stay warm. Here's a link with a lot of info one the subject. http://www.multiscope.com/hotspot/eggbinding.htm
