Canary cage fell - Worried -

Last night, I was washing the bottom part of the cage when the top part was left on stand with canary still inside. Next thing I hear was a loud bang and top cage upside down on the floor and canary looked 'confused' in it to then fly right into our window!

He lost quite a few feather from his body and 2-3 from his wings. Obviously he didn't sing this morning like he usually does. But I find he's not eating like he usually is and not as active. His movements aren't as graceful when he goes from perch to perch. Not even a chirp.

Any advice? Am worried if he never comes back to his old happy singing self. BTW I've notice some times his wings are lower, not droopy just firm with points lower than his tail.

Aww, poor guy. I find that birds tend to lose feathers when they're suddenly frightened, much like wild birds do when a predator has caught them. His feathers will grow back. I would expect the little guy to be traumatized, so he'll probably not act his usual self for a bit. However, if this goes on for too long, there could be underlying issues which may require the help of an avian vet.

41Gryphon, so how long should I wait for his normal self?

His condition is still the same. He was curious and went to his treat cup. Still no chirping or singing. He looks so sad on his perch. He usually moves his head around so much he is curious about things around him. He usually chirps when I'm close to his cage, now it seem that he only poops when Im close to his cage.

Sandra, if there are no signs of injury I would just leave him to his normal routine. Birds don't do well with stress, and he may just be freaking out for a little while. Give him a week or two and I'm sure he will be back to singing and forget all about it

Thanks DanteD716, I will try to calm down about this and give him time.

I already miss his singing. He sang so loud and proud, he'd be singing for a good 90sec or so straight. I wondered how he did to catch his breath.

Sandra if you have a heat lamp, you could always offer that, the extra gear sometimes helps a bird when they're stressed. And I know what you mean, that just keep going!

Sandra I agree with DanteD716, make sure you have a heat lamp. Any bird that's hurt or sick needs to conserve their body heat to heal. I think your bird is at least in shock or a little traumatized by the fall. I'd keep him as quiet as possible. If he gets worse, then you will know something is really wrong. He's probably just a little sore like a pulled muscle or something with his wing.

I'd give him a heat lamp and lots of good foods and hopefully he should be feeling better soon.

He likely pulled a muscle or got a bit banged up in the fall.

Birds poop when they're frightened so the fact that he's pooping when you get close tells me he's a bit nervous. Totally understandable since his world was quite literally turned upside down!

2 consecutive mornings without his singing ..... I think he is moving a lil bit more, but really no chirping and no singing. Can canary who been through a traumatizing event completely stop singing? Before since day 1, he always sang when I had tap water running. Now all he does is look around without a single sound.

I seen him standing on a random leg, is that a sign of illness?

I don't have a heat lamps, but our room we let him in for the day, is very warm and he has direct sun on half of his cage for a bit in the morning.

Sandra I know how it is to no longer hear your canary sing. You could try playing canaries singing found on you tube. My canary stopped singing when his cage mate for 7 years [finch] died. It took a few days but it did help him return to regular singing.

I've played his own recordings, he looks around but that's it. Im hoping he will sing again!

I'm not sure what you mean by this. Is he favoring one leg and he didn't do this before? Maybe he hurt his leg or the muscle above it. Keep watching exact movements and take notice to what seems to be hurting him. I do wonder if he is in pain. A regular lamp with a regular bulb if you have it is sufficient for heat. I'm not sure if you're thinking you need a specific heat lamp or not.

He's at the sun now, and sang 3 little times!!!

Ok, so when I thought the canary was doing better on Saturday .... he probably took a step back since.

I heard him chirping and trying to sing a little on Sat .... nothing since.

Just so I don't have hopes for nothing .... could it fair well be that the fall was way too stressing on him and his singing is permanently affected?
