Canary breeding season in SFL?

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Canary breeding season in SFL?

Post by afinch » Fri Sep 05, 2014 12:55 pm

Any south Floridians around who breed canaries? When does the season usually start around here? Clearly, you can modulate these things by controlling the micro-environment of the birds. I'm asking about the general bracket for birds housed outside. Also, how much impact does keeping the birds inside in consistently moderate temperatures have on the beginning of breeding behavior? Does it slow it down, or is it more dependent on daylight hours than ambient temperature?

Temperature doesn't affect them, but day length sure does. I have a canary hen whom I adopted in July who was housed under artificial day light and an unnaturally short light period. Now that's she's adjusted in her new home with natural light and currently 12 hour or so days, she's been laying clutches of infertile eggs (my male is not at all ready to breed, since they normally do so only in spring) and getting super broody. I hope she quits come fall, when she realizes it isn't actually spring - I worry for her health, since she keeps dropping the eggs she lays (her nest is so shallow) and then laying more of them.
