Amoxitex?

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Amoxitex?

Post by Olive25 » Tue Sep 30, 2014 7:57 am

Hi everyone,

Does anyone have experience using amoxitex the broad spectrum antibiotic on their canary? I'd be grateful to hear how it worked for you and how you administered it and what you used it to treat.

My canary was showing typical sounds and signs of ASM, however SCATT, which usually does the trick didn't work this time, and after speaking with Lorraine from lady G, she recommended I use amoxitex as it sounds like a respiratory infection.

Thanks,
Olive

Amoxitex is a good broad spectrum antibiotic. I've had good success with it.

Amoxitex or something with Amoxcyllin in it is usually in my medical stores for finches. Enrofloxacin(Baytril) is also quite good though not suitable for very young birds if I'm not mistaken.

Thanks, very glad to hear you had success with it. The preparation was a little confusing and it makes for far too much of the medicine (something like 2tsp for 4 cups). I used 1/2 teaspoon for one cup. I could tell right away my canary didn't enjoy the taste!

How long did you administer to your birds?

My vet advised me that no antibiotic should be used for less than 5 days and maximum 10. Your bird should show signs of improvement within 3 days of administering antibiotic. As with all meds it is good for you to finish the course and if 5 days is all that is needed give it till then. If it is still not 100% I usually give it for 7 days.

There after if your bird is still not well, then I would seek veterinary help if possible.
Also probiotics post treatment is a good idea too.

I add a little sugar to my medicated water to "help the medicine go down".

Thank you, that's really helpful. Today is the second day I've added amoxitex to Brownies water, he looks less better than yesterday. I'm hoping after day three I'll see an improvement.

I've also used it for canaries. Specifically for respiratory infections and infections associated with ASM (sometimes when you have a heavy infestation, they get an infection too as the dead mites are a place for bacteria to thrive before they get flushed out.)

I add honey to the amoxitex water.
If you dip a finger into the water with the amoxitex preparation, you'll notice it's very bitter-ish. So I'll add dollops of honey until it sort of neutralizes the bitter taste, making it subtly sweet.
Works nicely.

Remember to refrigerate the extra. The recipe does make quite a bit, so I make 2-3 days at a time and refrigerate the extra.
I also change the water 3x day, as Amoxitex has a tendency to separate from the water and settle on the bottom.
Plus, the honey (or sugar) makes it more prone to bacteria growth, so you want to switch it out more often.

It is best to make fresh antibiotics up daily if you can. Some degrade after mixing and can become less efficient. I'd not keep mixed antibiotic for more than 24hrs. But that's just my preference.
I just reduce the volume of water and medication ratio accordingly as you indicted you did.
I too hope your boy shows improvement!

Thank you. I have been mixing a fresh batch daily, id be too worried that day old solution will affect it's potency and don't want to risk it. Today is the third day of treatment, I will keep everyone posted. I really hope he pulls through, thank you for the good wishes.

In your experience, how long did it take for you to see improvements in your birds after administering amoxitex?
