Got my first pair of Lizards today and need help ...

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Got my first pair of Lizards today and need help ...

Post by vellad » Sat Dec 13, 2014 3:02 pm

So today I made a mistake that I usually advise others not to make. I am a Gouldian breeder and these last few weeks whenever I go to the pet shop to buy feed etc I always sawthese 2 Lizard canaries and I really liked them but never bought them. I have a rule that if buying birds I always buy directly from breeders and not from petshops.

So anyway - today I went in to buy seeds and came out of the pet shop with seeds and these 2 Lizards. I succumbed :( The shop owner assured me that they are a male and a female so I guess I have to trust him on that for now.

Anyway - this is my first time with canaries and I would like to breed this pair. I have been doing research and I have 2 capped lizards. One is white and one yellow - photos below.

From research I found out that there exists the full-cap, broken cap and no-cap. There also exists the Gold, Silver, Blue and Red colors and this got me confused as I am trying to see what type are my canaries. Can anyone help?

Apart from that I want to see if there are any recommendations re genetics. Example not to breed full-caps together etc. I couldn't find anything online.

I also have a question re quarantine but will create a new topic for that.

Thanks :)

Very nice birds. From what I read I think you have a silver (yellow) and a blue (white). Also, most breeders breed full cap to broken or no cap. See this website:

Hello,

You don't have silver and blue. You have greens with yellow cap and blues with white cap. Blues are greyish bLueish in color.

The male will sing and normally the female will not sing.
