Steve and Walter made a nest and she has laid eggs (certainly proof she is a girl!) and is actually caring for them, and Walter is helping!! STEVE JUNIOOORS
"Where have you been? I have been sitting on these things all day while you're out singing to that tramp outside the cage!".
"Want me to throw up some broccoli in your mouth to make up for it, love?"
"...
...okay fine."

Sheather -- Te he he he. That dialogue is spot on for the photo!!!!
So wait just a minute, seems we skipped a step here!
Last I'd heard, Walter was being unpredictably aggressive with poor little Steve.
I take it he's gotten to know Steve and now behaves nicely since he feels more comfortable?
Oh, the thought of baby Steve birds is just unbearably cute! How many eggs so far?
I wish shipping was safer and less traumatic; I'd totally sign up for a Baby Steve!!
I still can't accept Steve is a girl! LOL He's just a boy with girl bits.
That's how we refer to Eliza (a girl cat who happens to have boy bits.) Te he he

MiaCarter Walter and Steve were allowed to get to know one another a bit better for close to two weeks with Walter inside, Steve outside. After two weeks of him feeding her through the cage bars and then her laying an egg on the floor, I decided to try them together again. Walter has become a model citizen so far. The cage they're now in is also larger than the original one where he was getting aggressive periodically and that probably helps.
The two are confined still, though, because Walter and Kari still don't like eachother one bit. But Walter is settling and is no longer going nuts trying to chase Kari off when she comes near their cage and Kari has stopped edging him on and taunting him, so I am hoping eventually the two will get used to each other and be able to both fly loose without going for one another's throats.

I haven't counted eggs, I could just barely see one peeking in, but the cage is on top of the refrigerator and high up. She laid one egg 6 days ago or so, which she ignored as she lacked a nest, and which ended up breaking when I gave it to the societies. This seems a new clutch.

Sheather - Well that's great news!
Hopefully Walter and Kari will simmer down.
That's so odd that they just disliked each other from the first moment.....Actually, I guess it's not that strange, as there are plenty of humans who dislike each other from the first moment! Some personalities just don't mesh, I suppose.
For what it's worth, I've been able to get birds with similar dynamics to co-exist peacefully. It requires you to take on the role of moderator in the beginning, but I've been able to teach them to stay apart.

It's a teeny bit disappointing, as I had really gotten Walter with more of an intent to breed he and Kari, but the birds had clear other ideas and I'm not going to be one to break up true love. Walter and Steve are caged but in the bird room, not bedroom like before, so Steve and Kari can still see each other and seem happy to be able to, even though until just recently the two were generally quite unfriendly with one another.
It's possible that Kari could one day be paired with any male offspring of Steve and Walter, assuming (probably far too early!) that there are any. She's most definitely not related to either of them.
I am so excited to know if these eggs are going to be fertile! Urgh! I'm just picturing all the possible genetic combos going on here, they could take on nearly any appearance! Steve had yellow siblings and I'm told Walter's siblings were all Cinnamon colored, like Kari, rather than the blue he has. So any kids could be anything at all! And then the crazy hairdo genes come into play...

Very happy for you, and your two 'love bird canaries'.

We have children growing and developing in their little eggs! All four eggs are fertile. Steve is sitting tight and Walter feeding her around the clock.

Sheather - Oh goodness! What lovely news! So happy!
I take it Walter is behaving and being a doting dad, and not a bi-polar boy?
I'm counting my canaries before they're hatched, but would you ever consider putting one of the babies in a box and sending him on an airplane to Florida?
If so, SIGN ME UP! (very serious about that!)
I'm dying for another canary and would I
ever love a Steve and Walter baby --- a "Weaver" Canary! "Weaver" is so perfect, by the way,
KarenB! That's totally a fabulous couple name too! Odd name coincidences are always a sign of perfection in couple-dom! (Like me, a writer, marrying someone with the last name "Story" LOL I couldn't use that name professionally; it's so perfect it seems contrived! LOL)

Miacarter Walter's been very mellow since his wife has been expecting. He even assists in brooding when Steve has to get up for a drink, though that is rare because Walter keeps her very well-supplied with food and water himself. It's so sweet how he cares for her.
I don't think shipping is in the future. Our local airport is not nearby and I'd just be so worried something would happen. : (

Fabulous news! I love it when one takes care of the other that way. It's just so sweet. I guess from their perspective it means survival of the species. I can't wait to see the hatchlings. Are they set up where you can see into the nest fairly easily?
