My goldfinch decided to visit the other birds

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

My goldfinch decided to visit the other birds

Post by jonvill » Mon Apr 06, 2015 12:46 pm

Here is a photo of my EGF who decided to fly out of his cage to visit the other birds.
Most of the time, my birds would not leave their cages but this weekend Huey decided to see what's up. I hope his picture shows in the message.

Hi there.

Looks like Huey (love that name), has the soul of an adventurer. Good for him.

Do you normally keep flight doors open, or did he let himself out?

I don't usually keep the doors open but this time I walked away and he flew out. Usually, I can walk away while cleaning cages and come back without them flying out. Huey had two sisters (Dewy and Louise)
They were hatched about five or six years ago!

Hi, I never close the cages. My birds fly constantly between their cages and bird stands I made for them : ) Droppings are not an issue as they don't sit anywhere else. They go back to their cages to eat and sleep. No need to catch them : )

Huey's parents used to live in separate cages but when I would open the door they would fly out and "visit" each other. The hen didn't like the male in her cage so they actually mated outside of the cages after she built her nest.

I had a pair of canaries like that. It's how I know for a fact that canaries only need t mate one time to have a full fertile clutch!

I think your goldfinch is beautiful. They are one of my favorites, but the ones around here are wild caught and super flighty.
