So after my male canary passed, I couldn't wait....I bought another....three birds, ha. They are just beautiful, and so sweet! I'm keeping them all upstairs until they are done with their quarantine meds. I have a baby, 1 year old, and 2 year old. They've been here 3 weeks. All has gone well so far, except that I started noticing feathers falling from the 2 year old. After doing a candle test, I noticed he was getting a little draft. I moved him immediately and restricted his daylight hours, but he doesn't seem to be stopping. I'm worried about him molting this early. I'm already supplementing his diet to help with his feather regrowth, but I'm wondering if there is a danger in him molting twice in a year? Should I restrict his daylight hours till the days shorten again (a LOT of effort, but I'll do it if I need to). Any advice in stopping a molt or preventing another, etc?

Hi Karla.
I wouldn't try to 'stop' his molt, which might just get him stuck in molt, which you don't want. I would run with it. Lot's of good, nutritious food, vegetables, eggs, a bit of multi-vitamin, heat, light, and enough rest.

My boy Luciano, has gone through a mini molt in the winter last year, and then a full molt in the summer as usual. It happens.

Elana, thanks! I'll do that. He seems happy enough, so I'll just keep him comfortable, then.

My birds all go through a mini molt when I first buy them. I think it's the change in temperature, lighting, food, etc. from whatever environment they were in before.

If he moults now he won't moult later, as by the time he's done it will be the normal moulting time. He's only a short while early.
