Disappearing Bands (?)

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Disappearing Bands (?)

Post by lovezebs » Tue Apr 28, 2015 7:19 am

Hello Friends.

Day before yesterday, I got it into my head, that I should put some colour bands on my three little Canary fledglings ( Larry, Curly and Moe) , to be able to know who's who, as they get older. I caught up with them (screeching and all), and managed to slip red plastic bands over their huge feet (be still my shaking hands, racing heart and high blood pressure) and put them back.

As of yesterday morning, there was not a band to be seen. Now did I only dream about banding them (?) Or did those three little rascals (or their naughty parents) pull them off overnight?

lovezebs that's weird. Maybe the band was big enough to slip off?!?! I'm interested to see what happened.

Were they closed or open bands?

Hi guys.
They were just little plastic closed rings 1/2 of a perler bead ring) that I use to identify each clutch by colour, and to know who is who in that particular clutch.

I guess they were a bit loose....
Obviously they were a BIT loose :-)

I have been too nervous to use the close bands. Weird that they came off!

At times parents will take bands off their kids, especially if they are a bit loose. They see them as foreign objets attached to their babies ( which they are) that need to be removed.

lovezebs, I banded some of my Gouldians this weekend, but I used the split/open ring kind. I saw two of them pick at their band for a second or two, but then they stopped.

Yea, I will give it another try for sure.
I left it late, should have got it done before they fledged, but for some reason it slipped my mind.

Congratulations on banding your Gouldian kids Todd.

Well that's curious, isn't it?!

How funny that all three lost their bands; not just one.
I wouldn't have expected that.

They're crafty, those little ones.

this happens when parents are very obsessed with cleaning. you're lucky that the bands came off because i've seen babies thrown out with the bands.
one gross trick that works is to mask the bands with droppings
