New Canary - meet Tweety !!

I was at the Baltimore Bird Show last weekend, to find an unrelated Gouldian Finch to pair up with one of mine, and I ended up buying this Canary as well. I haven't had a canary since I was a kid 40+ years ago. The breeder told me he is an American Singer, about a year old. He started singing the morning after I brought him home! I aptly named him "Tweety".

After having finches for years, I've noticed how tame and steady Canaries are. I already have Tweety eating bits of hard-boiled egg from my fingers. Perhaps, I will be able to tame him to sit on my finger at some point and have some free flight time outside the cage? How tamable are canaries?

Beautiful! One of my friends raises American Singers, and I'm always tempted to get one (or more)!

Canaries that are cage-bred and from good lines are supposedly very tameable if young. However, in my experience aviary-bred birds are completely unsuited. Mine were very, very wild.

He's gorgeous.

One of my aviary canaries is very friendly and always comes over to see what I am doing. I am considering bringing them inside for the winter to see how tame they are. They don't seem to handle the cold as well as the finches.

What a pretty canary. Canaries are very tame compared to finches and some people have had success taming them. Eating off your fingers is a good sign.

I've been feeding Tweety little pieces of hard-boiled egg, through the cage bars, from my fingers, for the last few days. Now he is very excited to see me. The next step will be to put my hand in the cage with some egg or hemp seed (his other favorite treat) in my palm... we'll see how this goes!

He's a real good singer too. He is in the same room with my Budgie and Bourke parakeets. They seem to chirp back to each other, when Tweety's not actually singing. I wonder who will ultimately imitate who?

Lovely boy and a great name =D>

Canaries are little piggies when it comes to food, so if you know what he likes, you could get him quite tame. It just takes time and patience but you are already getting there :)

Well after rehoming my wild aviary-raised canary pair, I was planning on getting another more pet-quality American Singer this week, and partly inspired by your Tweety, I decided a little yellow fellow was just perfect for me, too. So visiting a local American Singer breeder in town, I picked out this little guy yesterday.

I'm calling my newbie Sebastian, and he too is already eating from my fingers! Must come with the breed. My mixed-breed canaries were never this calm - they were downright wild, thus why I decided to rehome them to someone with more space - but both American singers I've had have been very tame. I think I will see about hand-training Sebastian, too. He's already warming up to me so nicely.
