single egg...always

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

single egg...always

Post by jugleong » Sun Nov 01, 2015 10:25 am

Guys, quite new with canary. I bought my 1st canary pair less than 2 months ago and ask the breeder if I should separate them first. the breeder told me not to coz the female is ready. after 2 weeks under my care saw an egg (soft egg) on the floor so I was worried...and start feeding my pair with nutritious food and suppliment with calcium after a week she laid an egg (single egg) it hatched but on the 2nd day died, I knew she(baby canary) will died because she is small and weak I even help her out of the shell after seeing inside of the egg is drying out already while she's still straggling to get out. She laid an egg again last oct 29 until now still 1 egg :( . makes me really worried with her condition.

what do you guys think or assessment of my female canary?

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having.
Usually Canaries will have more than one egg in a clutch, but one egg is not unheard of. Is your girl sitting on the egg?

I would recommend a diet of good quality Canary/Finch seed mix . Along with that, I would offer grated hard boiled egg on a daily basis (half an egg should be fine for one or two birds, and you can refrigerate the other half for the next day). Greens, like spinach, kale, broccoli, cucumbers, parsley, beet greens, romaine lettice and other similar vegetables, should be offered in small amounts daily. Also some apple, orange slices, banana slices, are very good and enjoyed by Canaries.

It's very very important to offer cuttle bone, crushed oyster shell, and crushed egg shells from boiled eggs to your birds. These offer calcium, which is extremely important for your girl (especially if she is laying some soft eggs).

If you can find a mineral block for your birds, I would offer that as well, along with bird grit.

A dish of lukewarm water every day for a bath, would be appreciated.

Do you by any chance know how old your birds are?

Thamks Lovezebs,

Egg food are given every other day, will make it on a daily basis as suggested.

as for her age, she does have a legband but I havent check the year number. since she is with egg now I dare not bother her and base on my observation (last time) she is a good brooder and did tried feeding the chick as I watched from nest cam.

Well, keep an eye on them, and make sure she has enough calcium.

I was thinking along the same line Gouldiandaven, that she might be a bit older.

Good luck with this egg baby. Hopefully she will hatch a nice baby and raise it.
