Today I moved my canaries into the bird room with my finches. It was complete chaos. I took the canary cage into the bird room and opened the front latch. The male zoomed out immediately. The female followed shortly there after. Their presence caused a panic among the finches. Birds were flying into walls and flying into the windows. It was crazy. Now I know why Cindy was concerned about the grasskeets. I could see them hitting something in flight. Anyhoo, things did calm down and everyone has settled in nicely. The canaries had a nice bath and found the feeding station. So that is all good. I am relieved that peace has returned to the room.

Layne, just a bit of advice for next time. When introducing new birds into your bird room, I would bring them In, in their cage, and leave them in the cage for a while, until the current residents calm down and get used to the new kids (especially when the new kids must look like giants).

I hope no one got hurt in the madness of the moment.

For times like these would it make sense to have shades for the windows? Or maybe tack towels over the glass temporarily.

I had some mild panic occur to my birds when I started letting my parakeets fly in my sunroom, where my doves and finches are. I think the parakeets (Bourke and Scarlet Chested) appeared to be little falcons, at first... but they all got over it with no injuries. Now they all hang out together. The only finches that I give free flight time to are my Java Sparrow and Spice Finch.



I more recently added a male Budgie to my flock but he is behaving well, not annoying any other birds.


My Budgie is sort of a "ball of fire", in terms of his personality and presence, but he doesn't bother the other birds and usually doesn't stay in the sunroom for more than 15 minutes before flying back to his cage in another room.


My Java Sparrow is not really hand tame but he is quite friendly. While his cage mate is a Spice Finch he now sleeps next to one of my doves every night! Even when the dove's cage is closed, he found a way to sneak in the bottom, where I have the grate removed (because doves like to walk on the cage bottom).


All my birds go back in their cages at night time and only the doves and 2 of my finches get unlimited free flight time. My new Canary, Tweety, is eating egg food from my hand now but is not ready for free-flight yet. I want him tamer before I let him fly around loose. And he'll need to be real tame before he gets any free-flight in my glass sun room.

Ron, you've got a really nice set up going there. I bet your birds love the sun room. I'm glad to know they all get a long well.

Debbie, there is a shade on the window. I lowered it yesterday to stop the window strikes. The glass door has a screen on it which the male canary (I'm still working on names for them) likes to grab on to.
