Canaries & greens ~ frequency of feeding?
My canaries demolish greens. A pair will gobble up a romaine lettuce leaf in a couple of hours. . They'll fill up on lettuce or any other leafy greens and virtually ignore any seeds.
I've read somewhere that canaries shouldn't be given greens more than 3x/week. True? Is there any reason to restrict or is it OK to give them greens daily? They sure like 'em.

I rotate foods, lettuce, apple, banana, orange, broccoli, spinach, carrots. Eggs available all times (the processed type). and they also love morning coffee crushed.
I do sometimes skip a day but no real timeframe. just monitor them daily.

Coffee is poisonous to all finches.
Greens can be fed daily as much as the bird will take.

Personally I find that Canaries love greens and other vegetables and fruits as well.
I offer lots of different veggies and fruits and have never seen any adverse effects, other than the occasional green (greens) or red (beet greens or red chard) poop
when they have over indulged. It's just the colouring from the foods and no harm.
I offer:
Kale
Grated carrots
Peas
Carrot greens
Cucumber
Corn
Beet greens
Red Swiss chard
Parsley
Broccoli
Spinach
Baby Spring Mix
Peppers
Dandilions
Chickweed
Apple
Orange
Banana
Grapes
Melons
Blueberries
One BIG NO-NO, is Avocado (toxic).
And I would definitely stay a way from the coffee (not quite sure where the idea of offering coffee to birds has come from, lol).
I offer my guys veggies and fruits everyday.

Re: Canaries & greens ~ frequency of feeding?
quality of greens is most important, i wouldn't frrd lettuce as its high in water content, thawed frozen peas, broccoli, baby lettuce, safe dandelion leaves, a then only every 2md day and enough that will be gone in one hrpaul-inAZ wrote: My canaries demolish greens. Here's a link to the Finch Information Center's nutrition section about safe, toxic and unsafe foods.

I just got a really good laugh over that one.
I always find it hilarious, when these kind of misunderstandings occur

if this is basically a cookie meant for people...lots of sugar salt and nothing truly beneficial for birds.Too much sugar can cause yeast and too much salt can effect the kidneys. I would find another treat like fresh veggies...sliver of apple occasionally.Malti wrote:morning coffee is a type of biscuitwildbird wrote: You stated in the previous post that they love morning coffee crushed.
