Paired up canaries

So all but 1 of my paired canaries are showing signs of being in condition for breeding. 1 pair who I thought was male and female because they were kissing through the bars has not started yet or shown interest in breeding let alone building a nest. they are not fighting. could this be 2 females? I just don't understand why they would kissing through the bars. this was the main reason why i decided to pair off the canaries and attempt at breeding them. I'm debating on leaving them alone or contacting a local breeder who sells breeding canaries that are bred for breeding quality.

Not sure if this helps but 1 of the 2 attempts at singing but is not full song. its more chirping and choppy. haven't hurd the other one even try to sing.

How old are your kids?
If one is attempting to sing, then more than likely it is a male (there are some females who sing, but they are few and far between ).

They both are about 10 to 12 months old. They were raised in an aviary for most of that time but for the past month I had them in a breeding cage because they were kissing.

Jamm972 go online and check for female and male canary vents,
This will help you to compare with ur own.
Note its easier to tell the sex by the vent examination when they are in breeding condition.

I find that my canaries are light sensitive and require at least 11 hours of daylight to be in full breeding condition which is why I always wait until mid March to start pairing them up. Some of mine sing better than others and most start feeding each other (kissing) as a preliminary courtship behavior. "Eggs make eggs" so this is the time when I start adding high protein nestling food with hard boiled eggs mixed in a food processor (shells and all) to their diet.
