I'm in love....

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

slwatson I have 2 canaries, they feed each other all day. Both chirp 1 tries really hard to sing. I cant confirm that either of them are male or female but my guess is there prolly female. I'm just aggravated that neither of them are attempting to build a nest.

I am thinking of separating them for the summer molt and pairing them up with a different canary next year. I would take them to the Vet and get them checked/tested but that can be pricey.

I think you can send off for dna testing too, but I've never done that before, and I'm not sure how much it costs.

Using the needle test, this one does appear to be a female. Her eye is clearly above the beak line.

Please excuse the quality of the video...I had to shoot it from far away because he would stop singing when I got close

Jamm972@Babs

When I play videos of canaries singing from youtube, he starts chirping but doesn't sing. I probably just need to give it more time.

Babs

I felt like an FBI agent or something....I had to pretend like I was watching tv and hold the phone barely up over the couch so he couldn't see me =))

I remember doing that when I caught CackleJax doing his aweful song. At the end he of the video completely busts me!

Would be even funnier to take a video of us sneaking around our birds like little creepers. :))

I'm glad your little one turned out to be a boy.
Once he gets more confident, he'll sing up a storm for you. Find out what his favorite foods are, as that generally gets them to sing like crazy.

At some point t in the future, when he's singing non stop (and driving you nuts), you'll look back to this time and smile (between the SHUT UP ALREADY!!! comments).

LOL! I noticed last night he was signing more. He just needs to get comfortable and then he'll be driving me nuts soon!

OK....so I discovered last night that HE is in fact a SHE  There was an egg cracked at the bottom of the cage when I got home, and she hasn't been housed with anyone else. So I apparently have a red factor soft feather female who sings! Glenn is now officially Maggie!
