Fighting vs breeding new pair

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Fighting vs breeding new pair

Post by Jamm972 » Mon Mar 28, 2016 11:31 pm

Ok so I have a quick question.
I had a pair of canaries in a breeding cage. Orangie and Yellow. there was a divider. Today when I got home from work I decided to remove the divider to see what comes about. Well Orangie (the male) is chasing the hen (yellows) around the cage and pulling out her feathers. It hasn't even been an hour. Is he trying to mate with her and being aggressive. or is he being mean and territorial? As your well aware this is my first year attempting at breeding and pairing canaries. I'm just concerned and not sure if this is normal behavior. I don't want to come home from work and Yellow is bare from Orangie plucking out all her feathers.

it appears like there playing chase aka cat and mouse. Any advice? re separate them, re-pair them with other canaries? or let them be for a day or 2 see if the behavior improves?
I know the female is in condition because her hoo hoo is showing and lost some of her feathers in the area, she also built a full nest but wasn't compatible with the first male. Male wasn't interested and or not in condition yet.

Jamm972 is he singing while chassing her? If he is then he is trying to mate.

adoumski he sings in the same cage. but i haven't observed him singing wile chasing her. She showed clear signs of not being interested in him. I ended up putting him in his own cage for the rest of the season. and moved the hen to another cage with another hen and male.

Both hens are showing interest in the male and the male seems excited to have 2 hens instead of 1. But then again he was alone in his own cage for about 2 weeks. This is just an experiment to see how the multiple hens idea pans out. I don't really want to colony breed but running out of room once the chicks that hatch get old enough to fledged and feed on their own.

Jamm972 every year is a learning experience. And there are always dissapointments no matter how much you prepare. But it is fun when you successfully raise new babies and see them grow... :D

adoumski yes I'm already enjoying the 3 I have right now. one fell onto the bottom of the cage and had its neck stuck through the cage bar. I had to gently pull him back through and put him back into the next. There eyes are finnaly opening up and I think he got to curious from being able to see.
