Artificial light and Real light Dilemma

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Artificial light and Real light Dilemma

Post by Jamm972 » Thu Apr 21, 2016 11:18 pm

So I have a dilemma that will be coming up in a few weeks. The current room I have my birds in is in the front of the house and it gets morning Sun Light. In a few weeks I am going to have to move all of them into a new room at other side of house, which means they will be getting the evening sun rather than the morning. Plus I don't even think they will be getting direct sunlight. As a matter of fact they didn't really get direct sunlight in the current room.

My question is:

The new room has a smaller window will give off less light into the room. But still will supply them the significant amount of day light hours required for the mating season. Is this going to be ok, even though its not direct sunlight.

Also should I use the Florescent light that's in the other room to match the day light hours to assimilate Sun Light? Some one told me I could use a heat lamp or UV lamp but the room is heated and air conditioned to be around 75 to 80 degrees during the summer time.

Is the Florescent lighting ok or should I buy the UV lights?

Also Will this move possibly cause my canaries to go into an early molt. I would hate to inter fear with there breeding cycle. If so is there a way to prevent the molt from happening ?

Thanks to anyone that can help and offer advice.

I would not use a heat lamp as that will make your room very hot.
UV lights are mostly fluorescent bulbs and would be a good choice. They will be stimulated by the visual light and you will be able to control the length of time they get light each day.
Don't count on the UV lighting to give them any vitamin D. Hard boiled eggs are a great source of vitamin and minerals.

Here are a couple articles on lighting and the benefit your birds get from it.

thanks debbie276 Yes I have the long florescent bulbs I will be using for lighting. Next year around December I will be using these to simulate lighting changing the time by 15 mins every week. I guess because there is a window in the room they will get some type of consistency of natural lighting as well.

I suppose I will just have to chance moving the canaries in the other room and hope for the best. if the go into an early mote all I can do is treat them the best I can with molting food.

As far as egg food I give them this fresh daily, wile breeding and raising young. And I prolly will switch to 1 a week during the non breeding season.
