I am looking for a mate for my female canary. However, I have just realised that there are different sub-species. Does this matter when I only want to breed one time to increase my flock? Do they all inter-breed with each other?

All canaries are the same species and can breed with each other. The different types are just different breeds (like in dogs).

mohum What kind of canary do you have ? any pics. Most canaries can be bred together unless they have a Lethal gene such as Crested head, or Dominant white . I think there is 1 ore 2 more to look out for but if yours is a generalized canary you should be safe.

She's just green and yellow. I felt sorry for her when I put a nest in for the finches and she laid 6 eggs. She is so friendly. I am going to look for a mate or companion for her soon. Will try to get pics.

get a nice yellow and you will have some yellow and green babies.
or get her a white male and you will have some blue (totally grey), green and variations between green yellow and white.

Trouble is mate is that here in the uk we breed canaries to a very high std mainly for exhibition and would really be pointless in cross breeding any variety of canaries

All you'd end up with is a load of mongrells that nobody would want and would be useless for the show bench,
You'd also have a job in selling surplus stock aswell as they wont be pure bred birds of any quality

Moral to the story is stick to the correct breeds and you won't go far wrong
