Scaly legs, dead bird, is it mites? whats wrong

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Scaly legs, dead bird, is it mites? whats wrong

Post by Jamm972 » Mon Aug 29, 2016 11:03 am

So i woke up this am and one of my male canaries died who was still nesting with his mate. She is still sitting on 2 eggs for the end of the season.
When i examined the male, his legs looked way to much like mites. I have been treating most of my birds with scat but fear i may ave missed this one. I only had this male for about 7 months.
Can some one tell me if i am assuming right that it is mites and the canary is lacking iron from the mites taking in to much blood. Or could it be possible he passed away from something else.

My next question is should i treat the whole flock again even though i just treated some of them about a week ago and others about 3 weeks ago. I just dont know if all of them were treated or not.

I was told that if im treating them i shouldn't have to worry to much that as long as im treating them within a months time they should be safe. once the last 2 clutched hatch i am going to begin the disinfecting and spraying of each cage. but the issue is there is rugs in the room which gives plenty of places for them to hide until they can find a susceptible host again.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Scaly mites do not spread spread like feather mites... they burrow into the skin and are spread by close contact such as in the nest... simple cleaning and disinfecting perches and nests, cage will be enough, you do not have to spray rugs and the room. It does not transfer over like feather mites that crawl off the bird and find little nooks and crannies to hide in.

The mites can make a bird especially a canary anemic fast.

If you still have the body please pm me, the bird may have passed from other causes. Check the bird over is the breast thin, lower belly sunk in?

Scaly mites can be on the bird for up to 6 months to a yr before seeing physical signs of them.... what did you use to treat them?

Birds typically do not die from Scaly leg/beak except if it got into the sinus, causing a secondary infection that possibly can get into the brain
