Female dominating male

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Female dominating male

Post by Lightbulb » Wed Mar 22, 2017 3:08 pm

So I have my Canaries in 36" breeding cage. I introduced them after the female incessantly called to the male for days, he fed her, she lifted her tail feathers at him, etc.

The thing is, once the divider is gone, he seems uninterested in mating and she picks on him. The poor guy spends his days on the bottom of the cage because the moment he gets on a perch, she chases him away.

This is my second attempt at mating them and it's been clear eggs both times.

So two questions,
1) Is it too much stress on the female to lay a third time?
2) Any recommendations for the problems above or is just a personality mismatch?

My guess is the canary hen just doesn't like that male. It happens.

OR, she's sort of flirting and you're mis-reading that as 'send him over'. Has your hen started making a nest yet?

If the hen hasn't started to make a nest, put the male back on his side and wait until she has gotten serious about a nest.

How old is your male?
I wonder if he's either too old or too young.

Have you seen them actually breed?

Yep, she's started on the nest before introducing them together.

They are one year old.
