F canary. With a M gouldian?
hi
Hi, I can only have two birds where I live, and I have a young canary hen.
I don't want any breeding or territory issues, so can I put a gouldian male in the same large flight cage with her?
I'm new to birds and have been reading a lot but can't figure out what other bird she would live well with. She is used to living with many other birds, so when I play bird sounds she moves around a lot and seems happy.
I tried her with another canary hen and it picked on her most of the time

Katiecheyenne
I keep Gouldians with Canaries, without any issues.
That said, most birds do prefer to have at least one other of their own kind.
While Canaries, tend to be more of a loner bird, Gouldians (although not as cuddly as some species), do enjoy each others company.
Personally, I would try another female Canary.
Just because one didn't work out, it doesn't mean another won't be ok.
Another option, would be to divide your flight into two,
House your female on one side, and a male Canary on the other side. He will sing like mad for you.

Ok, if I get another female canary, how can I make sure they'll get along? I know they have to be quaranteened before being together so I can't just try them out to see, then return the bird if there are serious problems. The flight cage is only 30" wide by 40" tall, so dividing isn't an option, and I don't want a bird that sings a lot.
I bought her and the other hen that was in the cage with her, assuming that since they already lived together they'd get along!
The other hen was extremely dominant, even going so far as to dive bomb her when she was falling asleep on the swing.
I tried to do everything right so I wouldn't end up in the situation I'm in now
I can tell she'd like to have company though.

Honestly, a lot of the time hens don't get along, especially just two.
larger groups tend to be better, as no one bird gets picked on too much.
A gouldian, or two, should do fine with your canary in that cage.

What about society finches?? They're a little more affectionate and accepting than other types.
2 black cheek zebras and 5 CFW zebras, one A&M pied coturnix hen, my darling cream/lavender coturnix roo, and his attitude.

I think a society would be lonely with a canary. Gouldians aren't cuddly birds, and so are more in the canary camp of being OK with ambient company.
Societies need someone to snuggle and preen and a canary won't allow that.

Katiecheyenne I would personally for now your best bet is just keep the canary you have and not buy just one of any other finch ,canaries will do great alone you could also put a mirror in there for her and they do like swings too.Canaries only like to be together to breed then you usually have to seperate(there are a few that will live in haromany) but why take that chance.Good luck with your decesion.
