Babysitting...

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Sadly I won't be keeping Blondy....

Poor little Blondy, died in my hands a few hours ago...

I have no idea what happened.

He was fine, chirpy, in good appetite, happily bouncing around the cage and then he was huddled under the warm lamp, falling over, and breathing hard.

Some time later, he passed away peacefully in my hands..... :(

Wow, poor little guy, how come, he was doing so well :(

I'm sorry for you Elana.

I'm sure he had the best of the chances with you, but this things just happen sometimes, despite our best efforts.

Hope his brother will do better.

lovezebs Sorry about your little bird.. it's so frustrating, the way they're doing so well and you're working so hard and then they suddenly just expire.
2 black cheek zebras and 5 CFW zebras, one A&M pied coturnix hen, my darling cream/lavender coturnix roo, and his attitude.

Thanks fellas,

I know that these things happen, but usually for a reason.

Although I know there must have been a reason as logic dictates. Something went drastically wrong between the time when I was cleaning cages, and the time I went back into the bird room to fetch them for their feeding, but I can't for the life of me figure out what it might have been and that's what upsets me most.

He wasn't sick, he wasn't fluffed up, he wasn't in any way, shape or form showing any symptoms of a sick bird.

I went from this to this ......

I have bred these birds for some years by now, and i can tell you that some babies are just weak, probably due genetic problems.

Analyzing the pictures i can notice that blondy seems to be one of this cases, it is more obvious when we compare him to his brother, he seems way more fluffier, and down, his eyes seem to be more distant either.

I put the fluffy feathers down to the fact that they are frill Canaries, which I have never dealt with before....

Me neither, i only breed color canaries.

But still can see something was just not right with little blondy.

Browny looks nice, hoping this one will make it.

Good luck.

I really hope so.too.

He has started eating some of his baby food mixed with some spray millet today, which was good to see.

I am however not happy with his poop at the moment.

Anyway, here he is today...

Still with us this morning.

Mixed a couple of drops of pure apple cider vinegar with his baby food last night, and got a better looking poop this morning

How in the world I miss some posts, I will never understand. I'm so sorry about Blondy honey =((

How's Browny doing today? The ACV helping?

It does sound like Blondy was not quite right. If they get yeast, they will show signs like constant swallowing or excessive puffing and sleeping to warn you.

She didn't give you any warning. So it's one of those things. ~X(

Babs

Hi Babsi,

Yea, my poor little darling, not a sign of any sickness at all.

Eating, chirping, growing, sitting on my fingers..... dying in my hand!

Baby Canary still hanging in there.
He's eating his baby mush out of a dish now, and I caught him nibbling on some spray millet yesterday (thumbs up).

I offered some regular seed in a dish to see if he tries to crack some seeds.

Babs

Nope!!!

As soon as I see him eating and drinking, he's going back to Kevin (where he belongs). Maybe by next weekend.

Yesterday I noticed that he's begining to show some of his frill.
