Exciting

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Exciting

Post by FallenIce » Fri Apr 21, 2017 2:54 pm

Was doing my usual morning rounds today, checking food, water, etc. And to my surprise when I checked my canaries I saw they had an egg in their nest! I'm so excited! My first pair of canaries have their first egg.
Will keep everyone updated on how they're doing.
So happy
If anyone could give my any advice on helping my canaries to raise their egg it would be helpful. I ordered a book on caring for, raising, & breeding canaries but advice would still help. I've been giving them egg food and greens since I first got them, but do they need anything special for raising chicks?

Pretty neat ah, wishing you the best luck \:D/

You can provide them with hard boiled eggs along with the egg food, and don't forget that they will need a font of calcium as well.

Mine love apples, just make sure to remove any seed, i mean, the apple's seeds of course :P

Congratulations :-BD :-BD :-BD

That first egg and that first baby, are always so special and so eggciting.

Sounds like their diet is good.

As Ricardo, mentions....
Calcium at this stage is of paramount importance.

Keep that cuttlebone fresh and in an area where it's easilly accessable. Bring on loads of crushed egg shells, and oystershell grit.

The eggs are very important now, for obvious reasons, but also for their Vitamin D content, which will help them absorb the Calcium.

If there is an area, where they can get some direct unfiltered sunlight everyday, that would be great as well.

Keep loading the veggies, apple, orange slices, etc. along with good quality seeds, and spray millet.

Good luck,
~Elana~

--not too many disturbances. I have pinned some paper on the cage bars, so the nest is not quite so in the open. Cage bars aren't really a 'wall', and the paper seemed to help the hen settle in to her nest.

--don't move the nest! Birds remember where their nest is, not so much what it looks like.

--I almost always just let the birds do what they do. Some hens will lose their first nest, and be successful after that. Don't be alarmed if she doesn't sit till the end, or their infertile, or she doesn't feed well.

--Remember to read up on canaries and day-length. The number of hours of light they receive each day is important, and that needs to gradually change to match the seasons outdoors.

Hello everyone and good morning. This weekend has been pretty exciting :D
All five of my canary eggs have hatched! I have three whites and two grays. I know their colors will change as they get older but that's ok. I'm just so excited for my birds. The parents are my first pair of canaries and this is their first clutch. And they are doing so well at feeding the little fuzzy babies. I can't wait till they get bigger. I'm so happy!

Thanks for the congrats :D
No they didn't hatch on the same day. They hatched over the course of two or three days.

Hum, i would keep one eye on the small ones so.

With canaries the best to do is to revome the egg right after the hen lay it, and to place a fake in its place, and when she lays the last or the fourth egg, we put all the reals back in the nest at once.

That's for all the chicks to be born on the same day, because sometimes the last hatchling will not be able to compete for food with its older siblings when they have 2 or 3 days of difference.

So, it is good to have a hand feeding formula to help the parents with the small ones if necessary.

Good luck.

Oh so happy for you, and so proud of your Canary parents.

A very nice sized clutch, and for all to hatch, is absolutely wonderful.

Now to load up on the hardboiled eggs and the spray millet. They will be going through huge amounts of food to feed that brood.

As Ricardo mentioned, keep a close eye on the smallest ones, to make sure they're being fed enough and catching up to their oldest sibs. If not, then you will need to top them up at least once a day, until they do catch up.

Good luck.

Thank you all for the congrats and the great advice. I will be keeping an eye on the littlest ones. From what I've seen they are all being fed but am still keeping a watchful eye. Will keep everyone posted on their progress. :D :D :D

I'm happy to announce that the canary babies are doing well. I did loss one unfortunately, not sure what happened :( . I'm thing that it rolled out of the nest as I had noticed that the nest had tilted a bit. But the other four are doing just fine. I love watching the parents feed them :D
