Sick canary and no experience, please help!!

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Sick canary and no experience, please help!!

Post by Smedgar » Tue Aug 29, 2017 2:57 pm

Hi all, I am looking for some advice. I recently found a canary on the side of the road, nobody stepped forward so I decided to keep it for myself. He has been relatively happy, eating drinking and active.

The last few days I have noticed he had had poo stuck in his feathers and round his vent, I caught and cleaned it off twice and today noticed that it is red and swollen. I have been feeding him canary seed and broccoli which he loves but he didn't have any broccoli for a few days which is when the problem seemed to start.

Had had broccoli today and also gave him some grit which he didn't have for a few days as I read that canaries didn't need this? He is straining to poo but has pooed plenty today. Still seems active but does seems to sneeze a bit.

I have no idea of his history, previous diet, age or normal behaviours. Please help!

put some white paper on the cage and post some pics of his poop and also grab him and take some close up pics of his belly.try to move feathers on the side. its hard to diagnose sick birds unless you go for a feces test at the vet.

Smedgar If you are worried it is egg bound, put on latex gloves and feel the vent. If it doesnt feel hard, like an egg, then there is no egg.
I currently own:
An Australian shepherd
Many chickens
4 goats
A cat
And a bunny

Smedgar but be very careful when feeling it, if there is an egg, breaking it can make your problem MUCH worse.
