What type of canaries?

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

What type of canaries?

Post by Flight Feathers » Sat Nov 04, 2017 6:02 pm

Hi there,

I was just wondering what type of canaries these are. Sunny the male one ( right ) was just bought from a pet shop so he's probably mixed breed but the other one lightning (left) wasn't. In fact she was in a cage at some place and got into a fight with another bird as the cage was too small and the other. Bird broke her toe. The people who worked there didn't like seeing the blood so they rang up a canary breeder ( who is someone I know ) and he said he knew someone who wanted a canary, anyway that's how I got her. So I think there is a small chance that she could be a pure bred as the guy who had her only kept special birds- he died a couple of years ago tho so I can't ask him. Anyway lightnings toe is healed now but it healed upside down! So I'm thinking she could still be mixed breed but she probably has more chance of being pure bred than the usual pet shop kind. Thanks for taking your time to read this!

I'd say that these are non colour fed " New colour " canaries,

The bird sitting at the back of the pic could possibly be a New colour x Norwich canary,
In basic terms a cross breed between two different types of canary

Wow I actually thought she was a Norwich or Norwich cross but wasn't entirely sure! When I first got her she was brighter I think, but has gone lighter.

Question: do people show crossbreed canaries?

Flight Feathers

Na mate cross bred canaries have no place on the exhibition bench, there ok for general breeding of pleasure but dosen't really serve a purpose other than the exception of one or two crosses IE

Norwich x new colour and Norwich x border canaries, these two crosses have been purposely done over the years as the cross bred canaries are specifically used for breeding British and other European mules
