NESTING IN BUSHES

Hi. I have an aviary that is set up for finches with tea tree bushes etc. but as yet no finches. I do have 4 pair of canaries in the aviary and supplied 6 cup nests for them. One hen has nested in a cup nest but 2 other hens have made their nests in the bushes the way some finches do. Is this unusual? I thought canaries always used the cup nests.
Thanks Mick.

Hi Mick,

How are you?

If your girls want to nest in the bushes, good for them.

I know that in captivity, breeders always supply the little cup nests for their Canaries. However I am pretty sure that no one supplies cup nests for Canaries in the wild, and yet they manage just fine. So, if they want to build their own nests, let them have fun, and do it the way Mother Nature intended.

Good luck with the upcoming Canary infants :-BD

Any pictures of your setup?

I agree with Elana, let them do their thing.

Here are some samples of Canary nests, and the cups they can fit into...

I think a nest is the bushes is OK. My canaries sometimes make nests in nooks and crannies, and raised young in them. Make sure the nest is deep enough that the eggs or young don't flop out.

Some of my birds seem OK with ignoring the approved, store-bought nests that I provide. The little feathered rebels.
