Color expectations

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Color expectations

Post by Flight Feathers » Thu Jan 18, 2018 7:41 pm

So I have a pair of canaries who currently have babies. Both parents are orange, so I'm just wondering if that means all the babies will be orange? Or will I be able to get other colors? Thanks!

Congratulations!

With both parents being Orange, the babies will more than likely come out Orange as well, unless there are some hidden genes in the background of the parents.

Thank you! I haven't seen my babies yet, but I discovered egg shells deposited on the ground away from the nest, which is what the parents do with the egg shells once they have hatched!

Okay thanks I thought they'd most likely be orange too! Anyway I'll post pics once they start getting feathers!

The father does have a brown patch on his wing - does this indicate a split?

The brown patch suggests some varigation, not a true clear. This could very likely transfer to the babies, especially if the mom is split to have more varigation. More than likely you'll have orange babes though. Send pictures when you can :-)

There is just one egg in the nest now as the others didn't hatch.

Sorry to hear that. You'll get another clutch once the baby fledges. Good luck!

I just candeled the last egg, and if there was a baby in it then it died a long time ago. So I took the canaries out and have put them back in the avairy.
