Scaly legs. ..

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Scaly legs. ..

Post by Clairecanary15 » Mon May 21, 2018 3:32 pm

Hi

I was nose to beak with one of my canaries while doing their weekly tidy out and I noticed that her legs looked scaly and dry.

They all have mite treatment. .this particular canary went through a terrible moult not long after I got her.

Any suggestions would be appreciated on how to help her. She seems very well in herself. All of my others are ok ...Ive looked at all of their legs.

Separate her into a hospital cage. She might have scaly legs, which are caused by mites burrowing into her skin. And it is very contagious for the other canaries. You should see an avian vet so they can prescribe a medication. Use it to treat all your birds, even if they are not showing any symptoms as the actual effects have not been visible yet. Also disinfect everything in their cage and their cage to prevent the mites from coming back again.
Have a nice day!
Sincerely, Cathy

As Fraza said it could be due to age, as there legs will show scales as they age. Can you post a close up picture?

My River is ok now. Ive kept an eye on her and her legs are good. She is 2 years old..so not an old bird. I do wonder if she was deficient in nutrition when I got her...
