Question on owning 2 canaries.

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

Question on owning 2 canaries.

Post by Birdlover2018 » Wed Oct 03, 2018 9:15 pm

So I've had my one bird for about 7 months. He's not hand tamed which I would've liked but since he wasn't hand fed from a small bird it's been hard. I'm not sure what sex he is. I assume he's a male because he sings a lot. So my question is: Am I able to get another bird to give him another friend beside me?

Regarding Canaries...

If your bird is singing, then he is a male.

As to getting him a companion...

Canary males, are not extremely social creatures. They don't tend to crave companionship of other Canaries, particularly other males, whom they view as competition. They will fight.

Unless you have a large aviary, or unless you want to house them in seperate cages, I wouldn't recommand another male.

A female, may be tolerated, but then you have to consider breeding, etc.

When I had a lone male Canary, I added 2 very young male Zebra Finches and 2 male Society Finches, who were tolerated and accepted.
They were however housed in a very large flight cage

Hi

Or another cage with a male or hen in. They will tweet at each other. Two of my hens are exceptional singers. A singing canary is not necessarily a cockbird.
