Red Factor American Singer Canary...?

My dad wants a canary for Christmas. He's had them in the past and currently has a parakeet so this request isn't completely out of the blue and it's not like giving a bird to someone who has no clue. However, he's asked for a "Red Factor American Singer." I'm not a canary expert by any means - I thought Red Factor and American Singer were two different types of canary. I don't want to be showing up at bird shows asking about "Red Factor American Singer" if that's not even a thing. Is that a type of canary or is he just a little confused and mixing two names together into one? Google isn't helping much.

A Red Factor Canary, is a colour Canary, mainly admired for it's colour, which is enhanced with colour food.

An American Singer, is a song Canary, mainly admired for it's somewhat loud, pretty songs.

Now that said, there are red or orange American Singers out there.

Are you going to pick this bird from a breeder who specialises in a particular type of Canaries?

If you go to a bird show, you can definitely ask for an American singer with red colouration.

Unless your Dad is a real Canary expert, he will be more than happy with a nice orange/red bird with a pretty song.

Just a word to the wise.....most bright red Canaries that you buy, will molt to an orange colour, unless they are colour fed.

*P.S. You can always take Dad to the Bird Show, so that he can pick whichever bird he likes :) .

Taking him to the bird show is a great idea. I'll have to convince him to come to town the weekend it happens - for a canary, he just may!

There are a lot of birds that are called 'American Singer Canary'. In truth, to be a true American Singer, it must be banded with an American Singer Club band, and have a pedigree. That is a good thing, because it is a sort of guarantee that you're getting what you want and pay for.

At one time there were several American Singer canary breeders in Chicago. Start here: http://americansingercanary.org/

I know an American singer breeder in Chicago with great birds, but he breeds every color except the reds.

He most likely means a regular red factor canary.

And as Elana said, they need to be color fed at molt. I picked up a light brown canary from someone desperately looking for a bright red canary. After color feeding during molt, she turned the brightest red color under the cinnamon.
