Mixed Breeding

Although they are technically passerines, canaries tend to be managed uniquely, so here is a forum just for them!

If I cross a Roller Cock with a Hen Fife what should I expect to get.

A kitchen Canary.

Are you looking for a certain body type, or a certain song?

Some of my best singing Canaries are not a specific breed, but a mixed up mess of genetics.

Old time Canary breeders said that the best singers come from hens that have produced good singers. For song, I'd be inclined to use a Roller hen with a Fife cock.

Still, you don't know what you'll get.

Are you in the Northern hemisphere? It is too late in the season here to start a pair breeding.

Dave
Thanks for your advice.
I have only been keeping Canaries for just 12 months as a hobby.
I am more interested in the song than a certain body or colour.
if I cross breed and need to get rid of some of them how to I class them. eg Roller x Fife = ?.
You say you would use Roller hen with a Fife cock, would you get the same result with a Fife hen and a Roller cock.
I live on the boarder of Northern / Eastern Hemisphere but more Northern. I think you are right its a bit late to start pair breeding. I have 1 Roller Hen who doesn't seem interested in building a nest but in my small Aviary I have 2 Fife hens that I think are still interested, hence my question of cross breading.
