Hi, how do you determine the sex of a canary? Just wait for the breeding Season? And if so, pardon the newbiness, but when is the breeding season?thanks.peace.

Some say they can tell the gender of a Canary by various methods. And that may be true, if they are very familiar with the particular strain they have.

I've never been able to do that, reliably, in 25 years. The best method, I think, is to observe, and observe, and observe. Males should be singing now or very soon. Females, if they sing at all, will not sing as vigorously.

This is most important: The length of day when they see light should be the same length as outside. Are you in the Northern hemisphere?

Indoor lights or windows count as light. Using the Canary Islands, where the birds evolved, as a guide, your birds should be getting 11 hours and 20 minutes of light per day. After that, they should be in a darkened room, or the cage should be covered with a cloth. Re-figure the time each week.

Your boys should be starting to sing at around 3 months (give or take), at which stage you should be able to separate your males and females into separate flights.
