Cindy...I was looking at the parakeets in Petco this weekend and it was really hard to tell if they were healthy or not :( . One had a visible healed injury to her cere, some had there heads tucked for an afternoon nap and others were busy chowing on cuttle bone and seed. I'm so uneasy even thinking of purchasing an animal from a pet store now...even the tortoise we were thinking of buying turned into the decision to purchase a captive bred baby from a breeder (putting this off till next spring). Do you think I'm being unreasonable???

We have quakers and conures that can be seen daily, heard in flocks calling to each other. All it takes is a few to start a colony. Hurricanes, storms can destroy outdoor aviaries. It is just odd to see Black capped conures taking a buzz around the neighborhood when you are use to seeing them in cages!!!! I do not know of any capture program in place for wild "domestic" birds. I guess the question would be is once captured, they are so many...what to do with them and how to house them.
Besides the hurricanes and storms etc, you obviously have the ideal climate for these birds and animals to flourish. I hear you though, what would they do will all of the birds once they caught them? That is another whole problem on it's own...

On the plus side, they must be beautiful to watch flying freely :D

Well, after three more trips back to the island, I've yet to re-encounter the loose budgie. I had my net and cage with me to do whatever the spirit moved me to do at the moment. One day, I thought that I heard him off in the distance, as the chatter of a budgie is distinctly different from any wild bird.
Maybe someone else grabbed him? Maybe he moved on to another island? Maybe he returned home? Maybe a predator got him? In any case, the place is only 13 minutes from my house and I will continue to check on him weekly, if not more often. I'll continue to leave seed and millet sprays around, for which the doves, cardinals and blackbirds are greatful. Here are a few more parting shots of "budgie island". Bob

Bob, perhaps he is still about! Kudos to you for trying to find him!

Today my husband I ran to WalMart for a mister for the English Budgies...got out of the car and could hear Quakers in the trees. Walking closer we could see a nest and a mom feeding young, you can see them begging! Amazing how they have adapted here.
