This is a big step, and he's been doing this for a couple weeks now, where he'll climb down off his cage (the left one in the background here)and come around the corner, stand at my feet and make clicking sounds until I pick him up and sit him on the back of the couch. Then he seems content to just hang out with me there.

He has also found a way to get under the couch and tear up the lining, then get inside it and do who knows what. :|

We actually have two of them. One is macaw sized and the other is grey parrot size. We got one from a local bird shop and the other online.

So I've let his flight feathers grow in, and he is getting better at flying, mostly gliding down from a higher spot as opposed to plummeting down, so that is a good thing. It will take some time for him to gain flight muscle.

He still will not step up onto my hand from the cage, so if I need to get him I have to grab a towel. At that point he will fly away from his cage (and the towel) to an area that I can then pick him up from. He doesn't seem to have any issues stepping up onto my hand from anywhere else but his cage. So we play this game. At this point that is fine. He may never step up for me from his cage. Although I did manage to get him to do it once early on, it hasn't been repeated since.

Corky is sooo beautiful! How old did you say he is? He definitely is coming around very well with you. I have to ask one question....has he ever bitten you? That is my biggest fear of a larger bird. I know you mentioned having parrots before so you are experienced with them. But how did you get to that point?

Thanks for sharing the cute photo!!! You both look very content!

I have been bitten many times. If you have a parrot, it will happen. I am able to minimize that by being able to read their body language. Having said that, parrots really only bite for a few reasons, but not from spite or being mean. It is from an instinct they have to protect themselves from perceived danger and fear.

Corky recently bit me because I was not paying close enough attention to him as I was petting him through the bars of his cage, and the macaw flew over to his cage. It did not draw blood but it hurt for a minute. Generally I am good at avoiding bites.

It takes experience to be able to read a bird and see the signs of one about to bite. Birds will also bite if they do not want to do something that you want them to do, so you have to make it be their idea or make it to their advantage to do so.

There are many publications available on the subject, and it is more complicated than I can explain here.

Just know, if you get a parrot, no matter what size, you will get bitten at some point. The best advice on that is to not react to the situation, which gives the bird a reason to bite again, which could lead to habits you don't want them to find.

I came across a Parrot Rescue here in town.
Saw this poor creature on their site, and thought of you and Corky....

Oh, that poor bird. There are so many out there like that. It's very sad. I am very lucky that Corky s never a plucker. He seems to have handled his previous abuse rather well, considering.
