My Keet Collection

Post by Nipper06 » Sun Jun 03, 2012 9:43 am

I've been on this board for years, posting photos of my finches but I don't remember if I ever posted photos of my parakeets. My parakeets are "non-budgie" parakeets - I have 2 Bourke Parakeets and 1 Scarlet Chested Parakeet (note: all budgies are parakeets but not all parakeets are budgies!).

This is "Twitter" my Bourke Parakeet. She is the "Rosy" (pink) variety, which is not found in the wild. She is the tamest and friendliest of the 3. She flies right over to me and usually hangs out on my shoulder.

This is "Rosella" my other Bourke Parakeet. She is largely "Rosy" (pink) but has other colors (yellow, green, and blue). Some people call this mutation a "Rainbow Bourke". Rosella, like Twitter, had her wings clipped when I got her but the feathers have since grown in and she is a good flyer now.

This is "Elvin" my Scarlet Chested Parakeet. His coloration is the same as wild birds of his species. He is not as tame as my Bourkes. He never had his wings clipped and never got really finger tame but he does land on my arm occasionally. He likes to fly so much that I don't have the heart to clip his wings, which if done once, might tame him better.

Bourkes and Scarlet Chested Parakeets are extremely gentile and non-aggressive. They are among the very few hookbills that can be trusted in the same enclosure with finches and doves, both of which are pretty defenseless. My keets are allowed out with my doves and cause no problems.

Stunning! You are making me miss my days of breeding Rosey bourkes and Scarlet Chested.....they are delightful birds and when tame they are the sweetest birds!

Ron,
I always think of you as the java guy :D
I am a longtime keeper of grasskeets. I have bred the scarlets for over a decade but this year was my first for bourkes... 8 chicks so far from 2 different pairs... my third pair insist on just laying an egg on the floor... One was not broke so yesterday I slipped in in under one of my incubating scarlets
I have the yellow turquoisines also but they seem to not be the least bit interested in breeding this year....

Your birds look great and I agree that these grasskeets make excellent companions with finches if the enclosure is large.
