Cindy: I have a pair of recently acquired scarlets. The male is normal and I think about 2 years old. The hen is cinnamon and probably an early 2013 model. [The breeder is mailing me their predigree records so I don't yet know the ages for sure].
How old would she have to be before I even start thinking of setting them up for breeding?
thanks

males need to be at least 10 months or older. Hens need to be a year preferably 14 months, older the better.

The spoon is actually a teaspoon, could be the angle the picture was taken. They use just the tip but if feeding more than one they eat off the sides as well... I am on the look out for demitasse spoons to use on the smaller birds. The babies would not take to the syringe. The java young did great with the syringe but these refused it...so out came the spoon.

Going to check out Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma

Three of the 4 hand fed Scarlet Chested Parakeets. The 4th, a little Cinnamon decided to play in the water dish right before pictures. Letting it dry off a bit before posting a picture. He/She has a red belly and underside coming out, and has quiet the personality to! Mom is a Cinnamon with a red belly and a light violet blue face. Dad is a normal split to Cinnamon

Cindy:
I have a pair that I hope to breed next spring.
What size breeding cages are yours in? I have several 30x18x18s.
Would you risk breeding them in a larger flight cage that also has Bourkes? I've read that scarlets can get pretty aggressively defensive when breeding.

I advise not to breed them in a common flight with bourkes...males will get territorial, plus they are more active than bourkes.

Each pair had a 5 long x 3 ft flight. 30x18 is to small for their large wing span even for breeding. They can be flighty when younger and spook easily, a small cage in my opinion can be fatal. They enjoy the room to fly as do the bourkes...length is more important than height but if given the height they will use it. It is healthy for them to have flight room.
