Looking at Lovebirds Tomorrow?

Post by ranchnanny » Thu Oct 31, 2013 9:12 pm

I found on Craigslist some Lovebirds and would like anyone's opinion on them.
They are asking if all 4 are purchased $120.00 with the cage

They look beautiful.
Have you been around lovebirds before? Their noise level can be loud and piercing. There may be some YouTube videos that let you hear them. They are not for me.

They are still young, black on the beak...they are quieter than the other mutations of lovebirds, shyer. I assume these are related, hand fed?

The price is good for Blue black masked. I use to raise them and the green black masked. I would definitely give them a thicker perch if you get them...it is to thin.

They are very nice, and as Cindy mentioned, are still very young with the black on the beaks. Probably all siblings from the same clutch. Lovebirds were the first birds my wife and bought together shortly after getting married and will always hold a special place in my heart. We handfed many, many baby lovebirds. They are somewhat noisy at times, but no way near as bad as quakers or conures. Bob

I had 4 of them. They are entertaining, athletic, & active but can get noisy with their chattering. They seemed to chatter loudest when I was on the phone.
Hang some hardwood blocks for them to swing on and chew on. I used scraps of hard maple from my shop. Keeps them entertained for long stretches of time.
Good price for the quartet.

I had a pair of Peach-faced Lovebirds back in the 70's, and they were quite noisy.

Hi sherry ,
I keep and breed lovebirds ( fischer's ) , yes they can be noisy , I would consider budgies to be worse .
They squabble like all bird's but soon get over it and order is returned quickly .
Them being siblings should be in their favour this way as they will already have a pecking order between them .
Sound's very reasonable to me at $120 with cage .
Don't think the cage in picture would be roomy enough for the 4 of them .
I keep mine in outside flight's 6 foot long/high and 3 foot deep , they love to potter about , chewing the perche's/bark and any exposed woodwork .
I have put the wire on the inside of the flight's to avoid them chewing ,which they will do when breeding .
If the cage they're in is their usual home and they're young , which they are , it may still be possible to hand feed them and maybe tame some if you have lots of time .
I would be slow to put them with other bird's , maybe set them up in a flight cage 4 foot by 2 by 2 . also they do scatter their seed a bit so I use deep pots and half fill them with their seed .
Good luck if you do purchase .

Regards , Mick .

Thanks everyone for the positive and not so positive comments....
I had 11 zebra finches and 12 canaries so the noise isn't going to be a problem for me.

If I get them I will post photos

Thanks again everyone I knew I would get some comments.... Love them all

I had a pair of those black masked blue lovebirds years ago. We really enjoyed their antics and they had several clutches of chicks. In the end we just couldn't take the noise anymore.
All the best :)

They are so pretty! I love this color.

As to noise, I am a new English Budgie owner and they are definitely louder than my finches. The finches are in my basement bird room - and for now I am keeping the budgies in my family room. I may tire of it later on, but am getting such a kick out of these guys squabbling away and playing with such gusto.

Enjoy your new guys!

Congratulations!!!! Enjoy!!

As far as having them in the same room as your bourkes, I had over 20 pairs of lovebirds, bourkes, scarlets, parrotlets, maroon bellied conures and finches in a large outdoor room. The grasskeets had their own area/section and produced well despite the lovebirds and chatter. Currently my bourkes are housed in a birdroom in a large aviary and the budgies in flights cages along the wall opposite them.

A friend raises several different mutation of bourkes in the same room as parrotlets, conures, linnies and kakariki....the bourkes all do just fine.

The only precaution I would suggest is to make sure your lovebirds are quarantined in another room for now since you have young bourkes in the nest.
