Peas and Corn

Post by steve » Thu Dec 18, 2014 12:12 pm

Hi all

This afternoon I gave my Budgies a small bowl of cooked Peas and Corn, to my amazement half an hour later I noticed that they had polished it off, I think my birds eat better than we do.

I buy frozen mixed veggies, defrost portions at a time, chop it up a bit, and serve it to my birds. They like it all, but it appears they like the peas the least.

Mine loved peas and corn... I used the frozen peas and carrots and then added some of the frozen corn...warmed enough to thaw it but to not boiled and drained...they loved it as do the rest of my birds.

Budgies eat just about anything!!!!

See, that's what I thought too!
Can I schedule a lesson with your guys so they can instruct my picky pants parakeets how to eat properly? LOL

My budgies and cockatiel are so picky.
They never had anything but seed and it takes them WEEKS to try a new food, if at all. Drives me nuts!
I want to say, "Look, you're hookbills! You can eat such a vast variety of foods! Why do you limit your menu to like 4 items?"

What happened to my post???

My comment was, that my Budgies do not eat any vegetables, fruits or greens.

Opie will poke at things, but not really eat any, and Freebee, refuses all of it. And Folks, I have tried everything with little missy brat. I mean you have seen my veggie/ fruit trays, so you know what I mean when I say EVERYTHING. She won't touch anything but seeds.

I'm assuming that these two (although from different backgrounds) were simply not raised with fresh foods. However, I am not giving up. Hopefully at some point something will appeal and open up the gateway to the good things in life.

Hi all

We must also remember that some of the birds we end up with are not always as fortunate as others, I have seen caged birds that only get seed day in and day out. We care and it often takes time and effort to teach and change their diets.

Birds of mine that were born in my cages and grew up on variety actually expect it, I have seen them sitting looking at me as if to say "Hey, where's our veggies".

Same here....even ones on only seed that I purchased years ago can learn from other birds to try the soft foods sometimes it takes a teacher bird or two to show them. All mine eat soft foods (veggies chop mixes). The young that re weaning do right to it. If offered at a young age upon fledging they accept it readily.

When I enter the room my birds all know and wait as yours do. The birds out in the main room especially the scarlets all wait by the doors I put the food plates in through.

We discuss diet a lot with in several of the groups I help run on facebook.... there also a lots of information regarding diet.

here are a few we have in our files

lovezebs just keep offering. My linnies took months to try new food. When I first gave them pomegranate they ignored it, even though the canaries always investigate new stuff first. Last pomegranate season they ignored them and I would just leave one or two Pom seeds in their bowls and throw it out later. This year they were eating it like it was their favorite.

Atbird

I'm not losing hope. I am guessing, that both Freeber, and Opie both, were not raised with any fresh foods, and there In lies the problem.
