The Green Thing and Buttercup have a new baby
This is a new pairing of my 2 year old linnie hen Buttercup and her new partner, 10 month old Green Thing. She is a Cremino, and he is a normal green split to ino. We were hoping for a lutino baby, but it looks like this one's gonna be green like dad. There were six eggs in the clutch, two fertile, but the other is DIS. Maybe next go-around will be a bit more successful as Green Thing learns how to do his job a bit more effectively.

Oh. My. Heck!
Preciousness!
What a cutie pie!
Baby hookbills are just the most awkward-cute creatures ever!
It's the strangest combination of ugliness and beauty, but I just love it! Then you add the awkward body movements when they start toddling and it's just irresistible!
Are you handfeeding this little guy? Or leaving him to mum and dad? (That's what I always preferred. I'd let mum and dad do the lion's share, but I'd handle often and handfeed snacks. So they get the best of both worlds, but you need to have a parent who tolerates it!)
Are you planning to keep him and any siblings?
Can you post pics of Buttercup and Green Thing? ( <--Funny name! Is there a story behind it?)

Green Thing

Pippin (her first beau) and Buttercup

Buttercup in the nest box

The Green Thing got his name because at first he was just being a pill, and we called him the Green Monster because we had not yet named him, then it evolved to Green Thing as he simmered down. I guess it was the best we could come up with. No particular name would stick, but this fits him.
We were hoping for a Lutino, because it's the only color we don't have yet, and Pippin needs a buddy.

With this pairing, there are only two options, green and Lutino. Looks like those feather nubs that are about to come in have color, plus the eyes are too dark. They would be pink for Lutino.lovezebs wrote: KarenB

Re: The Green Thing and Buttercup have a new baby
We always let the linnies parent raise, and we handle as much as possible. Like you said, best of both worlds. So when we sell it, if it's a green, then it will be hand tame. Linnies generally do not like human hands, and you really have to work with them. None of our linnies are tame since they are breeders. But we just enjoy watching their antics and play.MiaCarter wrote: Oh. My. Heck!

Re: The Green Thing and Buttercup have a new baby
What a cutie. Can he be a turquoise? Because most greens are split to blue. Does Buttercup have any dark factors? I am hoping my two have chicks, last year they had 3 but none survived...I think it was due to a really bad mite problem, or to inexperience
.
How tame do the babies stay?
If mine raise chicks, I would prefer to raise them like you do because I feel that they get important lessons in how to act like a bird, but people want very friendly birds.

Re: The Green Thing and Buttercup have a new baby
The previous pairing with the turquoise dilute male, Pippin, and Buttercup made very pretty turquoise babies, but with this male, the only thing we should get is a green or lutino. This male we got from a breeder, so we know what he is. Cremino is of the blue line, but with the green male, the babies will be green or ino, since he is split to it.Atbird wrote: What a cutie. Re: The Green Thing and Buttercup have a new baby
If the baby is green you should name it Green Bean. It's so little.
I've only handfed a couple of Linnies and they are still a bit stand-offish about hands but like to run around and play on you...lol

Re: The Green Thing and Buttercup have a new baby
Green Bean is cute. I had a Beans society which was my first ever baby to survive. When I put this little guy in the finchbreeder database, I named him Greenbutt (for Green Thing and Buttercup)
