The Secret Nest

Last night, I went into the bird room to turn out the lights.
And Hunter the cockatiel was sitting alone.
Abby, his mate, was nowhere to be found.
This immediately frightened me as they're always together. Always.
And Abby nearly always flies right to me when I come in the room. And she always always comes when I call her.
I scoured the room and she was nowhere to be found.
I was perplexed.
And scared.
I sat down on the couch to think this through - how could my bird just disappear???
As I sat, I noticed a hole in the corner of one of the boxes (I boxed up all my desk and shelf contents when I started re-doing the bird room.)
Abby had chewed her way into the box and had made a nest in a pile of quilting fabrics.
She'd collected all sorts of little bits and pieces for the nest. Cardboard. Hay. Fake foliage. Feathers (which is odd. Usually cockatiels are not big nest builders.)
I shooed her away and she gave me a very agitated "meh! Back off, human!"
Lo and behold there were 3 eggs in there!
I was shocked!
She had a secret nest!
She was not happy when I pulled out the eggs and blocked off the hole in the box.
They weren't developed yet. I think she'd literally just started sitting. They look so huge compared to the finch eggs! LOL
But indeed, she scared the bejesus out of me!
So note to self: keep an eye on boxes for secret nests!
