cindy - I was astonished at how quickly three little babies were able to absolutely pollute for lack of a better word their nest box. Do you clean the box and put down fresh pine shavings before they've fledged or do you just leave it be until they are out of the box? The hen kept it so clean and tidy and then she hatched the poop monsters...lol

I do check it and clean it out, bourkes are a bit more messy in the box than scarlets.

I am anxious for two of my lutinos to mature, one hen has bonded with a young Rosey male.

pictures are from 1-2015, need to take more current pictures.. they have colored out more.

Oh they are gorgeous. I have a Rosey/Ino male and a Rubino hen. Their first clutch appear to be all Rubino. I'll try to clean out their box tomorrow then. I didn't want to cause them too much stress.

Some of my parent bourkes are tame, males come right up to me, sit on me when they were in the walk in aviary... the mother is tolerant of nest checks and my cleaning the box. I try to do this when she leaves the box for a bit. When the young are very small I try to leave them be as much as possible.

One of the males even talks, comes to me when I call him to come see me.

Aww. :) My male was handfed and to say he pesters you is an understatement. He likes to hang from the front of the cage until the door is open and then pop out for a visit. He steps up inconsistently but doesn't mind being handled if it isn't forced. He absolutely adores making a round or two around the bird room to frighten all the finches to death before landing on the floor to hoover up any fallen seeds...lol Silly boy. The hen wasn't hand fed and doesn't want to be handled, but has gotten over her skittishness. She lets me reach all around her in the flight and let me move her off the eggs and chicks to candle and check on them in the early days. They don't seem to spend any time in the box now and the kids are often seen peering out into the flight or screaming for mom and dad to come stuff their faces (so they can poop more). I'd intended on handfeeding the bunch but life got in the way. So now I'll just hope that handling them a little bit keeps them fairly "tame" in regards to being tolerant of people. I know they don't act bananas like some of the grass keets but I'd like them to remain calm around their new owners in the future.

These two would follow me through the aviary, sit on my head, tuck my shirt sleeve...after cleaning the aviary and putting fresh pine down if I sat I the floor of the aviary they were climbing all over me, eating out of my hand.

they are getting big... the smallest of the two (red eyed) we suspect will be a fallow mutation!!

The young are getting big... the baby at the top of the page is likely an opaline fallow.
