Update on my new Scarlet Chested Parakeets
Am still in love. Was away for 4 days vacationing in Texas; all birds are just fine.
Scarlets are sensational & I have so many questions & learning to do.
Female (Gladys) spends an awfully large amount of time in the nest box. Laid an egg on cage floor when I first got them, but nothing in the box yet. Male (Meatball) likes to sit in the box door & goes in once in a while. Does he feed her in there
Meatball has already taken a bath, drinks (a lot) from the drip/nipple waterer, and eats a lot.....and anything. Flys around in his cage; quite agile. Very calm. doesn't even leave the floor when I put in food. Took out the floor papers, crunched 'em up; he didn't even mind a bit. Chirps so nice & softly: I think he's happy. Gladys is sitting in the box door now & he's talking to her. Saw him breed her quite a bit when I got them. Looks like he's feeding her at the box door. Is she lazy, or what.
LOL
Meatball is from a breeder "Shades of Scarlets" in NY. He was DNA'd 5/2/2014. His papers say he is Normal split aqua, 50% possibly split cinnamon. I don't understand the genetics & terms yet.
Gladys is from Jim Deres in TX.
Cindy: you mentioned getting Calcium Plus (which is by Morningbird); I have some. Do I also need the dry calcium
The cage they are in is 30L x 35H. I plan to put them in a F050 which is 37" L & maybe join it up with an F040 which is 31".....that would give them 5' length.
First I have to sell my Gouldians; 17 adults, 23 young, 14 babies....I will be putting an add on Marketplace soon.

Re: Update on my new Scarlet Chested Parakeets
the calcium is AviTech Calcium Plus
you can get it from Glamorousgouldians.com Also you may want to add pellets to the diet like Roudybush (Nibbles size)
This is one of my scarlet fights I did with two cages connected... keep the set up inside simple... not sure what all the items hanging on the doors are but they can easily get caught up on it...

Re: Update on my new Scarlet Chested Parakeets
The stuff hanging in the doors was what I used to keep my Gouldians from wanting to fly out the doors. These Scarlets are so calm & not flighty at all, so I'll take that stuff out.
As always, thanks for your advice Cindy

finchandlovebird - Hoping zall goes well breeding them.
I recently red about scarlet chested parakeets. Are they very noisy birds? My niece had 2 parakeets once & they were so loud it was hard to carry on a conversation in the same room.

Teagarden - There are super quiet with soft little chirps. They are not flighty & very calm, sweet birds. They are totally amazing me

These are not like parakeets/budgies... quiet, more active in the early morning, evening and require different set up.
