Scarlet Chested Parakeet sitting on month old egg

Post by finchandlovebird » Sat Jun 13, 2015 8:33 am

Per the subject....should I take away the lone old egg & let her start over.....or is this just good practice for her. She comes out of the nest box a.m. & p.m. & other than that she sits on her old egg dutifully, and the male feeds her at the nest box hole. I think she's spoiled with such good attention.

They will continue to sit until they are satisfied it will not hatch. Incubation is about 18-20 days.

Have you candled the egg, use a penlight to see if it is fertile, you can do so without handling it.

Some hens live to sit and lay eggs without breeding. You need to watch this to make sure she is not just going through the motions and depleting her calcium reserves.
