Thanks for the responses. I read Cindy's post a while back, but will look it up again. These guys are in my mixed outdoor aviary and I have other finches nesting. I guess I will have to take them out and put them into a large flight cage with one nest box. I just hate to take them out of the aviary where they are so happy flying "free". Do you think they would settle on a nest eventually and lay in one? Or would this going from nest to nest go on and on and on???

Found the 2nd chick dead today; it had a full crop, but was a lot tinier than the 1st chick. He's doing well

Re: Baby Scarlett Chested Parakeet BORN !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dolly, sorry you lost the one baby. It is unusual for a baby to pass with a full crop unless there was a underlying condition. Was mom sitting on the chicks continually to keep them warm, only coming out briefly for water and to relieve herself, and to eat a little. If the baby was not kept warm and mom is out of the box for long periods the chick can get chilled and can have complications with yeast..
Suggestion... A bare bottom to the box is not good once the chicks hatch. You may want to lift the remaining baby up and add more pine to the bottom of the box, to prevent splay leg. Mom will not remove the pine at this point like she did when nesting.
I do not hang anything around my cages.... since my flights are long I feed and water at the opposite end from the box. The young fledge and are a bit clumsy at first, if you have a grate I would cover the bottom with white butcher paper... they do tend to run the bottom of the flights.
This will help with the life cycles... the only thing I would not depend on is the acquiring of red on the chest of the males, the article says by three months... some can fledge with a spot or two of red, others can take up to 6 months for one spot of red to show. The line on the underside of the wing are unreliable to use for sexing, it is not 100% accurate and can change.

Re: Baby Scarlett Chested Parakeet BORN !!!!!!!!!!!!!
thanks Cindy. The 2nd chick was soo tiny. Who knows exactly; I don't feel too bad; the 1st chick seems ok.
I did add some shavings to the box. Mom had hardly come out at all previously, so I'm pretty sure she was doing what she could to keep them warm. Now, just as of today, she is out more.
I do have the grates covered with paper
I'll be watching for that "spot or 2 of red", but I'm sure that won't be for a while yet
Thanks again for your support & info (and Paul too)

Its like having a teenage boy to feed. The difference is that this 'kid' is doubling it's size every few days.

Spaghetti fledged this last weekend. I was worried about him being flighty & scaird, but he is just as calm as his parents. Eating nicely. Mom is laying eggs.
