question about separating young Scarlet chested parakeets

DNA is done by breeders that sell the offspring at a very young age, uncolored or by those that want to know for certain when the offsring are young and not wanting to wait... It is strictly a personal choice. I hang onto mine until older, colored out,

Today (11/1) I had to removed the last chick; hatched 9/23, fledged 10/26. Dad was really picking on her & chasing her & would catch her & she would cry. I checked her wing underside, & she did NOT have the white bars. So does this mean she's a she??

Possibly...kind of early to tell. Keep track of the ones chased as they mature to see if they are indeed males.

How big is the breeding cage you are using and the size of the one you are using for the young?

Breeding cage is 62" long (2 F030 put together)

3 kids are in an F040 37" long, but made into 2 apartments (upper & lower). So I want to sell some Gouldians & allow this cage to be one big tall cage; I think that will be fine for the young ones then. (37" long x 48" high)

Young scarlets tend to be more active and need the length to fly, as the mature and start flying about the 37 inch will be to small... the height is not important since scarlets do not fly up and down like most birds... grasskeets fly back and forth. They also tend to run the bottom of the flights my flights are 4 and 5 ft long and they use every bit of it... I found those prevue cages to be inadequate for scarlets. They tend to fly about hitting the sides of those especially if startled. With young scarlets just weaned since they tend to stay to the top, a long flight not tall is better for them to move around and get to food easily. These are not live parrots or parakeets.

I agree from what you've told me before, Cindy. What I should do is move the dad into that F030, & put the 3 kids back in with mom in the long flight. Do you think that would work better?

And the plastic perler beads are too small to use on them for banding, right?

Perler beads are too small for grasskeets.

Contact L&M Legband and order colored split bands for grasskeets. I used the same size for my bourkes and English Budgies. They are very helpful there and will advise you on the correct size.

Both the parents and offspring need long flights.

Are you planning on breeding the parents again?
